Those works are part of an ensemble of experiments followed since end of 1974
The basic thematic of this ensemble has its origins in the latest topics made with 14 scales of colours (waves, virtual volume) as well as some researches on volumes I started in 1960. They used the same technical (airbrush, airgun paint) which made possible to obtain shades from dark to clear and a precise modulation of the surface; They helped me to develop new themes, and new domain of research was opening up.

Although in appearance, this ensemble of work could give the impression of a radical change, in reality it’s only the perseverance of an adopted attitude in a more or less clear way from the start of my researches in 1958.
This attitude had 2 more aspects: the first refers to situate and react in the reality, analyzing the artist situation and its social role, his contradictions, his limitations, the way he is manipulated by his cultural surroundings, his dependency with the power in charge etc… All this trying to fight arbitrary, inside or outside my own step, denouncing it or participating with others to some actions, intending to inflect the operation of the cultural machine.

The second aspect refers to the behaviour of continuous experiments with some risks to go wrong but also with the joy of adventure always developing, from pre–establish parameters, some of the multiple possibilities of every way.

So one can explain the diversity of my production. The diversity for me is fundamental. It’s answered to an attitude of research which I opposed without judging its value, to the repetition; most of the artists develop often for years, the variation of the same painting, to impose a certain image. This ensemble of paintings, drawings and essays realized in little more than a year represents my personal production in my workshop in Cachan. It forms my general activity. In this context, what I have achieved in a personal experimentation, I can’t say it is better or worse of what I could have done in this time; I simply say that’s what I did and what has been done!

To present my work is another step; it’s creating a distance between the production and me, because the others are looking at it. This will lead me to produce new starts, parallel or different from the previous one.

My first experiment in the plane in 1959 (white, grey, black and with the 14 levels of colours) were carrying very rigorous systems of organization of the surface from which I’ve tried a visual denomination (hemispherical vision…) The actual experiments, I named Modulations, are still founded on simple system of organization and correlation of forms depending on the same principal in each case. It seems salutary, in appearance that those experiments are different and sometimes diverged from my early researches.

In an attitude of research and in developing the experimentation, it’s good to move away from certitude, without ceasing to submit its own discovery to reflex ion and analyse.
